Indian Times: Oklahoma Anti-Discriminatory Mascots Act up for vote this week (Feb 02, 2009)
This week on Indian Times, we will focus on State Bill 765, the Oklahoma Anti-Discriminatory Mascots Act. It will be introduced Wednesday at the Capital by State Senator Judy Eason McIntyre. The Tulsa Indian Coalition Against Racism, also known as TICAR, is very much in favor of passage of this bill. Louis Gray, president of TICAR, speaks about the history of this group and why they are against institutional racism. Gray, who is from the Osage Nation, discusses the subtle and not-so-subtle attacks on the self-esteem of young Native Americans who attend public schools with team names such as the ?savages? or ?redskins.?
