Indian Times: Pushing The Bear, After The Trail of Tears (Jan 09, 2010)
This week on Indian Times, Cherokee author Diane Glancy stopped by the KGOU studios to talk about her new book Pushing the Bear, After The Trail of Tears. Glancy describes her heritage as Cherokee and German/English. She is a poet, playwright, creative writing teacher and been the recipient of numerous awards for her writing, including the American Book Award. Her most recent book, Pushing the Bear, After The Trail of Tears is actually a sequel to her 1996 book Pushing the Bear: A Novel of the Trail of Tears. A quarter of the Cherokee population died on the Trail of Tears. This book picks up that story and brings it forward by going through the process of telling the tale of one Cherokee family, of how they attempt to build cabins, raise crops and adjust to their new realities. But it really is a universal story of how a people start over.
