Indian Times: Cobell Class-Action Lawsuit Settled (Feb 14, 2010)
This week on Indian Times, the biggest story in Indian Country last week was the proposed settlement of the Elouise Cobell class-action lawsuit. Excerpts from Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazars and Cobells speeches made in Washington, D.C. last Tuesday are heard. This was the largest class-action lawsuit ever brought against the US Government. It was first filed in 1996, demanding the government address its shoddy management of individual American Indian trust accounts dating back to the 1800s, and that remuneration be made. Interior Secretary Salazar believes Congress will enact legislation to authorize the settlement before the end of this year. From there it goes back before the US District Court in D.C. To hear complete speeches go to www.doi.gov.
