Indian Times: Young Chickasaws Compose Classical Music (Jul 16, 2010)
This week on Indian Times, Native American music is branching out and the recent release of the CD ?Oshtali? will prove it. It is the classical compositions of young Chickasaws as performed by the string quartet ETHEL. Eleven students, ranging in ages from 13 to 21, studied music at the Chickasaw?s Summer Arts Academy under the tutelage of Jerod Impichchaachaaha Tate, the composer-in-residence. Tate is known for his marriage of native sensibilities with classical music. Tate along with two of the young composers, Amanda Shackelford and Cruise Berry, talk about their music.
