GM Layoffs Highlight Debate Over Oklahoma’s Business Climate – pt. 1 (Feb 21, 2006)
After nearly three decades, the last vehicle rolled off the assembly line at Oklahoma City’s General Motors plant yesterday. The 2400 people who worked there are the first casualties of GM’s plans to cut 30,000 jobs at 12 facilities nationwide by 2008 as part of a cost-cutting measure. The layoffs continue a recent trend of high-paying manufacturing jobs leaving the state, and they’ve sparked renewed debate about what Oklahoma can do to better attract and retain businesses. Guests include State Treasurer Scott Meacham, Senator Glenn Coffee (R-OKC) and Mickey Hepner, Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Central Oklahoma (4 minutes).
