Oklahomans React to Closing of GM Assembly Plant (Nov 23, 2005)
General Motors announced plans this week to close nine plants across the US and Canada and eliminate 30-thousand manufacturing jobs over the next several years as part of a cost-cutting measure. The layoffs are expected to start in early 2006, with the closing of the Oklahoma City plant. For the 25-hundred Oklahoma assembly line workers who make the Chevy TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy, the announcement was not totally unexpected, but they didn’t think it would be this bad or come this quickly. Guests: United Auto Workers local 1999 President Bob Alexander; OU Economist Robert Dauffenbach; State Representative Richard Morisette (D-OKC) and Richard Ruiz, Zone Committeeman for the plant’s second and third shifts (4 minutes).
