Arkansas Sues Oklahoma Over Water Quality Issues (Nov 07, 2005)
Arkansas's Attorney General has announced he's suing Oklahoma in the US Supreme Court. He said Oklahoma’s attempt to enforce water quality laws threatens Arkansas farmers and the poultry industry. The action comes in response to lawsuits Oklahoma filed this summer against eight poultry companies doing business in Arkansas. Oklahoma claims meat processors like Tyson Foods weren’t doing enough to stop phosphorus-rich chicken litter from polluting the Illinois River, which flows into Oklahoma. But Arkansas Attorney General Mike Beebe says the suits pose a threat to Arkansas’s sovereignty and that Oklahoma failed to exhaust all avenues of dialogue before filing suit. KGOU speaks with Arkansas Attorney General Mike Beebe and Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmonson (4:00).
