Faith-Based Prison Partnership Bill Heads to State Senate (Mar 13, 2007)
The Oklahoma House passed legislation this week intended to encourage faith-based and other volunteer groups to help re-integrate inmates into society. Speaker Lance Cargill, the author of House Bill 2101, hopes the proposal will help Oklahoma move away from a warehousing mentality that often helps create “better” criminals because of lessons they learn while behind bars. Kurt Gwartney speaks with The Rev. Stan Basler, the Director of Criminal Justice and Mercy Ministries for the United Methodist Church in Oklahoma. The Rev. Basler believes this bill could help keep criminals from returning to prison once they’re released, shoring up the church’s efforts to reach Oklahoma inmates.
