StoryCorps in Oklahoma: Long-time Friends Find Love (ENCORE) (Feb 10, 2012)

For newlyweds, Anh and Matthew Weber, love was... gradual. These long-time friends would get to know one another over a period of years before taking their vows.

Matthew was interested in Anh early on, but he said she kept pushing him away.

“I didn't want to date my brother's friends,” Anh said.

“You remember I asked you out like six times before you finally said yes,” Matthew said. “And I used to get mad and leave like parties because you'd say, ‘No.’ I wouldn't understand why you would say, ‘No.’” ”I don't think I intentionally meant to, like, hurt your feelings or anything,” she said. “I think I just kind of was kind of, you know, you're my brother's friend.” ”Yeah, but you'd kiss me and then you'd just turn around and give me the cold shoulder; it was pretty mean,” Matthew said. Matthew told Anh he would talk to his mom about her attitude all the time.

“She just told me to stay after it,” he said. “And I'd be like, I don't know. She reminds me a lot of you. And she's perfect, but you know. After a while I just kind of played it cool. Pretty soon you came to me.”

“I guess it's how it works,” Anh said. “Girls like it whenever guys play hard to get I guess. How long were we friends before we went to New Orleans?” ”Uhm. Five years.” ”Five years. It took me five years and a trip to New Orleans for something to click.”

"It was at Tipitina’s", Ahn said. "I remember I made out with you and then I…"

"You dragged me outside!" (laughter)

Ahn replies, "It was just weird. It was weird to know someone for so many years and then have that overwhelming feeling."

"Yeah. It was a good day."

The story ends with the two complimenting one another, and looking excitedly towards the future.
