Oklahoma House Republican Spars with Speaker-elect (Nov 26, 2010)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — An Oklahoma House Republican with a reputation for supporting conservative issues is urging the chamber's speaker-elect to make illegal immigration, Second Amendment rights and conservative social issues a priority.

Rep. Randy Terrill of Moore says Republicans strengthened their majorities in the Legislature in the Nov. 2 general election in part because of their strong support for conservative issues. But Terrill says published comments by GOP House Speaker-elect Kris Steele of Shawnee indicate his primary focus will be economic development.

In an article published Thursday in The Oklahoman, Steele said he wants Republicans to focus on key issues and not get distracted by filing measures that could be considered frivolous.

Terrill says the speaker's job is to reflect the views of the House's members, not thwart them.
