Group Targets Oklahoma for Fetal Pain Law (Dec 09, 2010)

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Oklahoma is one of several states where those wanting to restrict access to abortion may push for a fetal pain law.

Abortion rights foes are emboldened by a new Nebraska law that restricts late-term procedures based on the disputed notion that fetuses can feel pain after 20 weeks.

The success of the Republican Party in November has made it likely some state legislatures will consider passing such legislation. Republicans hold record margins in both the House and Senate, and may find GOP Gov-elect Mary Fallin more likely to sign abortion restriction laws.

National Right to Life held a strategy conference this week in Arlington, Va., to offer its state affiliates guidance for the 2011 legislative session.

Indiana, Iowa and Kentucky lawmakers have already started drafting bills similar to Nebraska's law, and abortion opponents are pushing lawmakers in Oklahoma, Kansas and Maryland to do the same.
