State Traffic Fatalities Continued Downward Trend in 2010 (Jan 03, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY - The State Department of Public Safety today released preliminary data for 2010 traffic fatalities indicating a continued downward trend.

There were 625 traffic deaths in Oklahoma in 2010. That’s down from 737 in 2009 and an eighteen year low.

While officials are unable to pinpoint the exact reasons for the reduction, Oklahoma Highway Patrol Captain and DPS spokesman Chris West cited improved technology, education and aggressive enforcement, as well as the state’s 86-percent seat belt compliance rate.

West did say the number of deaths could increase slightly when official numbers are released due to some delayed reporting.
