Barresi Says Education Secretary Will Be an Asset (Jan 04, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — State Superintendent-elect Janet Barresi says the decision by Gov.-elect Mary Fallin to appoint an Oklahoma secretary of education makes sense.

Barresi told The Associated Press on Tuesday there will be no competing messages coming from her and Phyllis Hudecki when it comes to educational policy in Oklahoma. She says she's been friends with Hudecki for more than a decade.

Fallin's predecessor, Gov. Brad Henry, did not have an education secretary although he has been lauded as an education-friendly governor. Former Gov. Frank Keating, Henry's predecessor, did have an education secretary.

Barresi says Hudecki's emphasis will be on workforce development, which Fallin has said will be a major focus of her administration. Barresi says that will allow her to focus more on her duties at the Oklahoma Department of Education.
