UPDATE: Online Charter School Has New Sponsor (Jan 13, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The state's first online charter school now will be sponsored by a rural Okfuskee County school district.

Graham Public School Superintendent Dusty Chancey said his district has signed a two-year deal to sponsor Epic One on One Charter School, which plans to open for the 2011-12 school year.

The deal must be approved by the state Department of Education.

A recent change to the state's charter school law allows school districts with a site on the state's school improvement list to serve as a charter school sponsor. Chancey said this is Graham's first year on that list.

He said the school located near Weleetka has operated an online school for four years.

The University of Central Oklahoma was Epic's original sponsor but both parties agreed to end their agreement.
