Coburn Wants to Discuss Gun Access by Mentally Ill (Jan 17, 2011)

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn is willing to discuss ways to limit gun access by the mentally ill but remains opposed to bans on high-capacity gun clips.

Coburn appeared Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" to discuss the aftermath of the attempted assassination attempt on U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz., which left six people dead.

The Tulsa World reports from its Washington bureau that Coburn said the problem is that a mentally ill person "had access to a gun that shouldn't have had access to a gun."

Coburn said someone should have made sure that Jared Loughner, who's been charged with the shootings, received mental health assistance and been "taken under care." Had that happened, Coburn said, Loughner would not have been able to buy a gun.
