National Group Allowed to Intervene in Abortion Case (Jan 21, 2011)

Oklahoma County District Judge Noma Gurich ruled Friday the organization “American Victims of Abortion” can intervene as defendants in a lawsuit that challenges the constitutionality of a law that requires women wanting an abortion to first have an ultrasound and then have it described to them.

Attorney Suzanne Stolz is an attorney with the Center for Reproductive Rights, who represents the plaintiffs in the case.

She says the ruling is disappointing, but shouldn't change the unconstitutionality of the new law.

Even though Judge Gurich denied three women and an organization called Operation Outcry the right to intervene in the case, their attorney, Samuel Casey, is pleased with the ruling.

Casey says they'll be able to tell the story of women who have not seen the ultrasound before deciding on having an abortion.

A pre-trial conference in the case has been set for April 29th.
