New Okla. Superintendent to Conduct First Meeting (Jan 27, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - New state Superintendent Janet Barresi is set to preside over her first state Board of Education meeting since taking office earlier this month.

The board will meet Thursday in Oklahoma City with Barresi replacing Sandy Garrett, who didn't run for re-election after 20 years as state superintendent.

The board plans to meet in executive session to discuss two lawsuits, including one involving the state's first online charter school.

Community Strategies Inc., which operates Epic One on One Charter School, sued the state Department of Education in August, seeking a district code so the school could receive public funding. A judge ruled in favor of the charter school and the state board voted later to appeal that decision.

Since then, the charter school has changed sponsors.
