Three Killed in Icy River Wreck in NE Okla. (Feb 03, 2011)

MIAMI, OK - The winter weather has claimed three more lives in Northeast Oklahoma, as a pickup truck jumped over a guardrail and into an icy river early this morning.

The Ottawa County Sheriff says the Chevy Avalanche was traveling west on Interstate 44 near the town of Miami when it plunged 80 feet into the frozen Spring River.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says five people were rescued as the Miami Fire Department lowered a basket over the bridge to rescue victims who’d climbed on top of the vehicle.

Several of the divers and other rescuers had to be treated for hypothermia and exposure.

The accident brings the total number of weather-related fatalities in Oklahoma to four since Tuesday’s blizzard paralyzed the state’s two major cities.

A 20-year-old woman died Tuesday in Oklahoma City when she was thrown from a homemade sled being pulled by a pickup truck.
