Storm Prompts Cancelation of Okla Legislature (Feb 08, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Legislative leaders in the House and Senate are planning to cancel the session on Wednesday and Thursday because of an incoming winter storm.

A spokeswoman for House Speaker Kris Steele said Tuesday lawmakers decided to cancel the legislative session because forecasters are predicting up to 10 inches of snow and brutally cold temperatures. Lawmakers are expected to return to the Capitol next week.

This is the first week of the legislative session, and Steele expressed concerns because of the long distances many members travel to get to the state Capitol.

A winter storm warning is in effect for nearly all of Oklahoma through Wednesday, with strong winds that are expected to result in low visibility and snow drifts of two to three feet.
