Schools Debate How to Make Up Snow Days (Feb 10, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Back-to-back winter storms have meant some Oklahoma students have not attended school in February and others have been in class for only a couple of days.

Most districts build a handful of snow days into their schedules — but those have been exhausted and leave school administrators across Oklahoma with decisions to make on how to meet the state requirements for classroom instruction of either 175 days or 1,050 hours a year.

It's not as simple as tacking days onto the end of the school year. State-required testing is set for April and May and districts typically want as much classroom time as possible in advance of those tests.
