Finance Official Who Prompted Exchange Hired (Feb 22, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A state finance employee whose proposed hiring at the Oklahoma Department of Education prompted a heated exchange during a board meeting last month has been hired to oversee state budget operations at the Office of State Finance.

Officials at OSF announced Tuesday that Jill Geiger will become the agency's budget director.

Geiger was one of three employees new Republican Superintendent Janet Barresi attempted to hire last month at the Department of Education. The board rejected her hiring during a testy meeting in which one board member called Barresi a "dictator."

The board is composed entirely of appointees by former Gov. Brad Henry, a Democrat.

The panel also refused to hire two other employees Barresi requested who are currently working at the department and being paid with private funds.
