Survey Shows Regional Economy Improving (Mar 01, 2011)

The regional economy for Oklahoma and eight other Midwest and Plains states continues to improve at a healthy pace that's reflected by encouraging employment numbers.

The Business Conditions Index for the Mid-America region rose to 63.2 in February, up more than 4 points from January.

The survey of supply managers says 11.3 percent of firms reported layoffs last month, compared with 24 percent reporting layoffs at the beginning of the nation's economic rebound in July 2009.

The survey and report use a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100.

Organizers say any score above 50 suggests economic growth in the next three to six months, while a score below 50 suggests a contracting economy.

Other states in the survey are Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
