GAO Report Highlights Gov't Duplication (Mar 01, 2011)

The Government Accountability Office released its first report to Congress today outlining federal programs and agencies that have duplicate goals and activities.

U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) introduced an amendment to last year’s debt limit vote that requires the annual report by law. Coburn said in a statement that the report shows hundreds of billions of dollars that could be saved without cutting services.

“This report confirms what most Americans assume about their government," Coburn said. "We are spending trillions of dollars every year and nobody knows what we are doing. The executive branch doesn’t know. The congressional branch doesn’t know. Nobody knows.”

Coburn cited what he called a lack of coordination with regard to local and federal response to bioterrorism threats, and federal highway programs that haven't been re-evaluated since 1956.
