Senate OKs Income Tax Abolishment (Mar 02, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Senate has approved a Democrat-sponsored amendment that would abolish the state's income tax.

Democratic Sen. Tom Adelson of Tulsa attached the amendment to a Republican-sponsored bill to reinstate a tax credit for companies that hire aerospace engineers. Adelson said later he was trying to force Republicans to "keep their word."

Democratic leader Sen. Andrew Rice says he expects Republican leaders to eventually strip the amended language from the bill, but that Democrats wanted to make a point that eliminating the state's income tax is not an easy solution.

Republican Senate President Pro Tem Brian Bingman of Tulsa was in a meeting and could not be reached for comment immediately following session.

Oklahoma's personal income tax accounts for about one-third of the state's revenue.
