Oklahoma Bill Prohibits Coverage for Abortions (Mar 08, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Health insurance exchanges established under the new federal health care law would be restricted from covering elective abortions under a bill approved in the Oklahoma Senate.

The Senate on Tuesday voted 36-10 for the bill by Sen. Anthony Sykes, R-Moore. The bill allows for an exception in cases where an abortion is required to prevent the death of the mother.

Under the bill, coverage for abortions could only be obtained through a separate supplemental policy. Current law already requires separate policies for elective abortions under private plans.

Several Democrats objected, saying Republicans in the GOP-controlled Oklahoma Legislature is chipping away at a woman's legal right to an abortion.

Former Democratic Gov. Brad Henry vetoed a similar bill last year.
