U.S. Interior Secretary Salazar visiting Oklahoma (Mar 15, 2011)

ANADARKO, Okla. (AP) - U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says his visit to Riverside Indian School in Anadarko is about expanding quality educational opportunities for American Indian children.

Salazar visited the school Tuesday morning. He and deputy assistant secretary Jodi Gillette toured the school, met with Riverside faculty and students and are took part in a student assembly.

Riverside is the largest off-reservation boarding school in the federal Bureau of Indian Education system with 540 students from grades 4-12. It was established in the 1870s.

Salazar and federal Bureau of Land Management director Robert Abbey are scheduled to participate in a teleconference later Tuesday at the federal building in downtown Oklahoma City. The teleconference will focus on energy production and the economic benefits of public lands.
