Oklahoma House Approves Child Custody Bill (Mar 17, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma House has passed a bill returning sole custody of a child born out of wedlock to the mother.

The measure passed 87-10 on Thursday and heads to the Senate.

Its author, Rep. Aaron Stiles, says the law was inadvertently changed last year to give the mother and father of a baby born outside of marriage joint custody.

Before that, the law gave the mother sole custody while the father could petition for joint custody.

Stiles said the Department of Human Services experienced problems this year because of the change.

He says when mothers would reach out to DHS to try to get child support from the father, the father would instead remove the child from daycare.

Opponents worried the bill was taking the rights away from the father.
