Health Insurance Exchange Approved by House (Mar 18, 2011)

The state House approved a bill Thursday that would set up the membership of a board that will create a state health care exchange for uninsured residents.

The bill, sponsored by House Speaker Kris Steele, passed 51-34 and now heads to the Senate.

The measure creates a seven-member board that includes representatives from the Oklahoma Health Care Authority, insurance agents, insurance providers and consumers.

The board will oversee the implementation of the Health Care for the Uninsured Board, an insurance exchange that will help consumers pick an insurance policy.

Opponents say the bill is implementing President Obama's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
