State Forester: No Plans for Statewide Burn Ban (Mar 18, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The head of Oklahoma forestry services says there are no immediate plans for a statewide burn ban even though 32 of Oklahoma's 77 counties have issued their own bans.

State Forester George Geissler said Friday the individual county bans are sufficient for the time being.

Geissler said he has been in contact with Gov. Mary Fallin's office about whether she needs to issue a ban for Oklahoma. The Forestry Services makes a recommendation to the Governor's Office when conditions have warranted a statewide burn ban.

Geissler says even though the state experienced an extreme wind event that led to last week's outbreak of wildfires that destroyed more than 30 homes, conditions for a state ban haven't been met.

He says a statewide burn ban is more long term.
