Woods County Tops State Health Rankings (Mar 30, 2011)

An annual ranking of the health of people living in Oklahoma’s 77 counties is out, and Woods County in the northwest part of the state remains the healthiest.

Harmon County in the southwest along the Texas border is the least healthy.

The rankings from the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation show the premature death rate in Harmon County is twice that of Woods County.

The report also says the teen birth rate in Harmon County is three times that in Woods County. The number of children living in poverty in Harmon County is 41 percent, more than double the 19 percent rate in Woods County.

Overall, the least healthy counties are clustered in the southern part of the state with the healthiest in the northern tier of counties and in the central part of Oklahoma.
