House Panel Approves Bill to Restructure Medical Examiner's Office (Mar 31, 2011)

A plan to overhaul the troubled state medical examiner's office is being considered by Oklahoma lawmakers.

A bill to abolish the current Board of Medicolegal Investigations and replace it with a new Board of Forensic Pathology was unveiled Wednesday in the House Public Safety Committee, which unanimously approved the measure.

The bill would also rename the agency the State Board of Pathology. It now heads to the full House.

State Rep. Randy Grau says he'd like to see a fresh start for the agency, which has been plagued with the loss of its national accreditation and is at the center of a bribery investigation involving a current legislator and former state lawmaker.

The bill would create a new governing board and outline the duties of its new director. -- AP
