FBI: Ex-senator Under Investigation for Years (Mar 31, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — An FBI agent says former Oklahoma state Sen. Mike Morgan was under investigation for years before he was indicted.

Special Agent James Finch said Thursday that the investigation into the former Senate president pro tem has been ongoing for years. Allegations in the indictment date to 2004. Morgan left the Senate in 2008.

The indictment released Wednesday accuses Morgan of accepting more than $400,000 in illegal payments from three companies while he was in office. He's charged with lobbyist William Skeith and attorney N. Martin Stringer with conspiracy, extortion and mail fraud. Morgan also faces a bribery charge.

Morgan's attorney says the indictment is politically motivated and that Morgan will be exonerated. Attorneys for Skeith and Stringer said their clients deny wrongdoing.

Arraignment is expected sometime next week.
