Senate Approves Changes to Election Dates (Apr 07, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Primary elections will be held a month earlier in Oklahoma under a bill approved in the Senate. The Senate on Thursday voted 45-0 for the "Let the Troops Vote Act."

The bill calls for the primary to be held in the last week of June, instead of the last week in July. The bill also moves the three-day filing period for elective offices from June to April and makes other changes to election procedures.

Republican Sen. Anthony Sykes of Moore says the changes are needed to comply with a federal law requiring overseas voters, including soldiers, to receive absentee ballots in a more timely fashion.

Senate Democratic leader Andrew Rice of Oklahoma City suggested lawmakers consider eliminating Oklahoma's runoff election, but Sykes says there wasn't much support for that idea.
