O'Connor: Emphasis Needed on Civics, Government (Apr 14, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor says the federal No Child Left Behind Act is to blame for not placing enough emphasis on civics and government in today's education system.

O'Connor spoke Thursday to students at Oklahoma City University's School of Law. She says today's middle and high school students are not learning enough about how the government works. She said half the states no longer require high school students to study government because No Child Left Behind doesn't fund the subject.

O'Connor has developed a web-based program called "iCivics" that uses games and graphics in an effort to get students interested in the subjects.
