Senate Approves Anti-illegal Immigration Bill (Apr 27, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A legislative plan to crack down on illegal immigration in Oklahoma is drawing fire from both sides of the political spectrum.

Some Democrats say the bill passed Wednesday in the Oklahoma Senate unfairly targets hardworking immigrants. But some conservative Republicans say the bill doesn't do enough to penalize employers and broaden the powers of local law enforcement.

The House author of the bill, state Rep. George Faught, says he expects the bill to be overhauled in a joint House and Senate conference committee.

But Faught, R-Muskogee, acknowledges the measure likely will not include harsher penalties for hiring illegal aliens.

Faught says the goal of the bill is to focus on public safety and target mostly those engaged in smuggling illegal immigrants for profit.
