Lawmakers OK Consolidation of State Agencies (Apr 27, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Several state agencies would be consolidated into the Office of State Finance under a bill approved by the Oklahoma Senate.

The Senate voted 36-9 Wednesday to consolidate the Department of Central Services, Office of Personnel Management, State Employees Benefits Council and the Oklahoma State and Education Employees Group Insurance Board.

The director of the Office of State Finance is to consolidate the administrative functions of all the agencies by the end of the year and demonstrate a 15 percent overall cost reduction as a result.

Opponents argued the move likely will require up-front costs and that fewer employees will be required to do the same amount of work.

Two other agencies were removed from the bill — the Merit Protection Commission and the Archives Division of the Oklahoma State Library.
