Fallin Vetoes Ardmore Branch Campus Bill (Apr 29, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Gov. Mary Fallin has vetoed legislation that would convert the Ardmore Higher Education Center into a branch campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Fallin vetoed the bill Friday. She says she supports expanding higher education in Ardmore but that the measure by Rep. Pat Ownbey and Sen. Frank Simpson, both of Ardmore, lacks a comprehensive plan for sustainable funding.

Fallin says the bill's intent is to maintain the new college campus with funds from local government and private contributions. But she says it's doubtful the campus can be sustained in the long run without significant state support.

Fallin says it would be inappropriate to proceed with the project while the state faces a $500 million budget shortfall and has no estimates on what the new campus might cost.
