OKC Unemployment Rate Among Best in U.S. (May 06, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY - Employers added more than 200,000 jobs in April for the 3rd straight month, but the unemployment rate nationwide rose to 9% in part because some people resumed looking for work.

Oklahoma City’s unemployment rate of 5.2% gives the city the 12th lowest city unemployment rate in the nation.

Speaking on CNBC Friday afternoon, Mayor Mick Cornett attributed what he called a ‘boom time economy’ to tourism and the energy sector.

“We’ve been very successful in attracting highly educated 20-somethings to our city, drawn to the city by the quality of life we offer, and the entrepreneurs and the job creators are able to be successful,” Cornett said. “National economies are cyclical, regional economies are cyclical. We’re in a very envious position at this time.”

Cornett also cited aerospace jobs, medical research, and population growth he says isn’t typical for Oklahoma City.
