Indian Times: OKC Indian Clinic to benefit from Mark Harmon Celebrity Weekend (May 07, 2011)

The Oklahoma City Indian Clinic is one of the recipients of funds raised by the Mark Harmon Celebrity Weekend.  It’s a 2 day event starting next Friday with a bowling tournament  and auction in Edmond followed the next day by a baseball game in the Bricktown Ball Park.  Chief Development Officer for the Indian Clinic is David Toahty (Kiowa/Pawnee), he talks about how the money has been used.  Tickets for the event can be bought at the Clinic (4913 W Reno)  and on the day of the ball game.
The US Senate Committee on Indian Affairs held a hearing last week on the detrimental effects of stereotypes and native themed mascots…but the use of Geronimo as a code name for Osama Bin Laden became a recurring theme as panelists one by one addressed this issue.  We’ll hear excerpts from Suzan Shown Harjo and Charlene Teeters testimonies, and activist Richard Ray Whitman weighs in on this insult to Indian Country. For more on the hearing go to www.indian.senate.gov.
