House Redistricting Plan Clears Panel (May 09, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — While a legislative plan to redraw Oklahoma's 101 House district boundaries is being praised as a bipartisan effort, Democrats in the Senate are complaining districts are being drawn in secret with the help of a GOP political consultant.

The House proposal cleared another legislative hurdle on Monday when it was approved by House members on a joint conference committee with just one member dissenting.

Republican House Speaker Kris Steele and House Democratic leader Rep. Scott Inman both praised the House plan as a cooperative, bipartisan effort.

But maps of the proposed new 48 Senate districts have not been publicly released, and Democrats say they're being left out of the process.

Senate Democratic leader Sen. Andrew Rice says Senate Republicans are "using political interests as they're driving motivator."
