Jury Selection Starts in Trial of Okla. Pharmacist (May 16, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Jury selection has concluded for the day in the trial of a pharmacist accused of fatally shooting a teenager who tried to rob his store.

Officials say eight people were excused from jury duty in the case of Jerome Ersland following Monday's initial round of questioning. Jury selection is scheduled to resume on Tuesday.

Ersland has been charged with first-degree murder in the May 19, 2009, fatal shooting of 16-year-old Antwun Parker. Prosecutors say Ersland was justified when he shot Parker once in the head during the robbery but that he went too far by shooting Parker five more times in the torso as the unconscious teen lay on the floor.

Two men accused of helping plan the robbery were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
