Oklahoma LB Box Dies; Witness Suspects Overdose (May 19, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Police are investigating whether drugs had a role in the death of Oklahoma linebacker Austin Box.

A police report says a man at the house where officers responded Thursday morning believed Box had overdosed. Authorities didn't immediately release an official cause of death.

The Norman university sent out statements from President David Boren and athletic director Joe Castiglione confirming Box's death. Box's body was sent to the state Medical Examiner's office.

El Reno Police Chief Ken Brown said officers and medics responded to a call at a house about 30 miles west of Oklahoma City concerning an unresponsive male. Brown identified the man as Box and said he first was taken to an El Reno hospital, then transferred by air ambulance to an Oklahoma City facility.
