Proposed Downtown OKC Boulevard Named (Jun 01, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A new boulevard to be built in downtown Oklahoma City will bear the name of the city.

The Oklahoma City council voted 8-1 Tuesday to accept Mayor Mick Cornett's proposal that the $85 million road be named "Oklahoma City Boulevard."

The Oklahoman reports the boulevard will replace the current alignment of Interstate 40 south of downtown. The road is expected to serve as a major gateway to downtown and is key to the city's "Core to Shore" redevelopment efforts. It's scheduled for completion in 2014.

Cornett works for an advertising agency and says the boulevard provides "a naming opportunity for the city" and gives the city "an opportunity to attach its name to something very positive."

Critics like councilman Pat Ryan say the name is "cumbersome and too long."
