Contractor Charged with Consumer Fraud (Jun 07, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — An Oklahoma construction contractor has been charged with fraud for allegedly taking payment to repair roofs after recent tornadoes and strong storms — then failing to perform the work.

Six counts of violating the Oklahoma Consumer Protection Act were filed in Oklahoma County against 57-year-old Harold Whitt and two counts were filed against him in Cleveland County.

Attorney General Scott Pruitt told The Oklahoman that the type of storm damage seen in Oklahoma and in southwest Missouri attracts criminals looking to take advantage of homeowners. He said home repair scam and charity fraud typically follow weather damage.

Prosecutors say Whitt's whereabouts are unknown.
