Charges Filed Against 2 in Adoption Scam (Jun 08, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Charges of trafficking in children and conspiracy have been filed against a man and a woman in an alleged adoption scam in which women fake their pregnancies and dupe adoptive couples into paying their living expenses.

The felony charges were filed Wednesday against Oklahoma City residents Scott Thomas Smith and Serena Carol Mathews. Assistant District Attorney Scott Rowland says each is in custody on $100,000 bond.

Authorities say at least 20 people have been tricked into paying the living expenses of women in the scam. In one case, a man contacted authorities after a woman failed to go into labor three weeks after the due date.

Rowland says victims have lost up to $30,000 in the scam.

Court records don't indicate if the two have retained attorneys.
