Ed Department Unveils IT Restructuring Plan (Jun 09, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — State Superintendent Janet Barresi says an information technology restructuring plan unveiled this week could save the Oklahoma State Department of Education more than $4 million during the next six years.

Barresi said Thursday her agency has worked with the Office of State Finance on the plan, which she says is projected to save about $650,000 during the next fiscal year.

State Chief Information Officer Alex Pettit says the plan will involve updated computers within the Education Department, a more efficient telephone system, standardized email and calendaring systems and an improved WiFi system.

Also, staff technology positions currently under the Education Department's employment umbrella will be moved to the Office of State Finance after July 1.

Barresi says the plan will help allow the agency to operate more efficiently and effectively.
