Oklahoma Wheat Harvest Called "Disheartening" (Jun 10, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma wheat harvest is being called dismal and "disheartening" with about 70 percent of the crop now harvested.

The state Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry has maintained its forecast of 74.8 million bushels and a yield of 22 bushels per acre for this year's crop. That's down from 121 million bushels harvested in 2010 at an average yield of 31 bushels per acre.

Drought in western Oklahoma is blamed for much of the problem. The U.S. Drought Monitor reports the western half of the state with drought conditions ranging from severe to exceptional.

Hail, tornadoes and wildfires are also blamed for the low harvest.
