Okla. State Worker Bonuses Total $42M in 2010 (Jun 20, 2011)

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Oklahoma state employees have been paid $42 million in bonuses based on the time they have served in their jobs but not on the quality of their work.

The Tulsa World reported Sunday that the $42 million paid in 2010 is a sum larger than the budgets of major state agencies, such as the Department of Environmental Quality and the Oklahoma Tax Commission.

The bonus system was begun by the Legislature in 1982 as a way to reward workers who devote their careers to working for the state.

Oklahoma House Speaker Kris Steele of Shawnee says that with the state having budget difficulties, the Legislature should evaluate the program to ensure it is generating the intended results.
