Certain Unemployment Benefits Ending for OK (Jun 23, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Officials say certain federal emergency unemployment compensation benefits will expire soon for Oklahomans.

The Oklahoma Employment Security Commission says Tier 3 benefits that were established in 2009 provided up to 13 weeks of additional unemployment compensation to claimants in states with unemployment rates of 6 percent or greater.

But since Oklahoma's jobless rate fell below 6 percent to 5.3 percent this month, residents will no longer be able to receive Tier 3 benefits.

Unemployment claimants are first eligible for up to 26 weeks of regular state unemployment benefits from the OESC. Once those are exhausted, claimants can receive Tier 1 benefits from the federal government for up to 20 weeks.

After that, claimants can apply for the second tier of federal aid for no more than 14 weeks.
