OKC City Council Approves Order of MAPS Projects (Jul 05, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY - Planning for all eight MAPS 3 projects for Oklahoma City is underway, and today the City Council passed the MAPS 3 project order recommending by the Citizens Advisory Board.

There was some controversy, though, concerning a new 280 million dollar convention center south of Reno Avenue between Hudson and Robinson.

KFOR and other local stations report the building of a new convention center ranked as the least popular MAPS 3 project.

Today’s 4-3 vote effectively slows the time-line for building that 70-acre downtown park, while fast tracking the convention center.

Councilman Pete White says the subcommittee for the convention center has some of the most powerful people in Oklahoma City among its members and they’re moving forward at the expense of everyone else.

But Mayor Mick Cornett says the public should’ve be bothered. He says all the other projects will either be completed or underway by the time the convention center breaks ground.
